Show and Tell on Wednesday

At Show and Tell on Wednesday we were treated to a wonderful and varied display of work.  Just to mention a few.

Suzanne C. showed us the table runner she learned at patchwork last week.

Annette has dressed her wearable art barbie.  These will be table decorations at the wearable art fashion show on April 21.  Please make the costume so that the doll is able to sit on the table.

There were postcards from the very popular postcard swap

and cards for the birthday card box.  (Members are reminded that they are expected to contribute at least one card a year to the birthday card box.)

There were toys from the toymakers (a separate group to F&F) who meet to make toys for the sick children who are admitted to A&E.  (Please talk to Carol Mcg. if you are interested in helping.)

Annette made prints on fabric using paint and a fish skeleton and

Betsy has made a set of cat blocks based on the style of famous artists.

Annual Meeting with Those Across the Sea!

Fiberians took the ferry across to Magnetic Island on Wednesday 15th June for the annual get together with the island craft group. It was their turn this year to host us.

Annette reports "It was a lovely day, too much food and talking as per normal. There were some interesting works being done by the Magnetic ladies, an amazing scarf that they have found out about. You can buy the 'wool' from Lincraft apparently and it comes with the pattern on the wrapper. Pretty amazing looking scarf.." Thank you for the photo, Annette.

Del, who is visiting Townsville from the Sunshine Coast, went along and said that she was very impressed by the number of charitable organisations which the Island group support, that the food was (as usual) sumptuous and the ladies very welcoming.

Sounds like a wonderful day was enjoyed by everyone.

Pink Tie Tea!

Once a year Fibres and Fabrics hold a morning tea to raise funds for our Sewing for Cancer group, run by Jessica, to buy the materials they need. This year Donna and Selena organised the morning and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. There were some great prizes sponsored by PomPom Rouge and Studio 2. We were asked to dress in black and white and to wear a pink tie. Linda won the prize for the best tie closely followed by Jan and Margaret W.
A goodly amount was raised, thank you Donna and Selena for a wonderful morning.

Some Eye Candy for Those not at the Last Meeting

A small peek (on the left) at some of the postcards doing the rounds in the postcard swap at the moment.

On the right is some gorgeous weaving, a very successful first quilt, a lovely bright textile art piece and the clever use of a vinegar bottle to make a mask for the 'White' exhibition. (Save your vinegar bottles which have handles!)
More inspirational ghostly stick people pictured to the left.

Diane C continues to make these delightful knee rugs for nursing homes. Those shown on the right are just three of many she brought in at the last meeting.
And while on the subject of charitable ventures, during the meeting some hands kept themselves busy knitting squares for Dinie's knitted rugs for charity.

Bits and Bobs

Anne with Margaret and the log book cover Margaret made for her on behalf of all at Fibres.

This is the detail on the cover which Margaret D made for Anne and Michael T's log book to take along on their sailing journey. The log book and a waterproof satchel in which to store it were presented to Anne last week (see previous post).  We all wish you the best adventures, lots of excitement and beautiful times. Have a safe trip!
Val's been using the embellishing machine to great effect and has made some stunning pieces.

And, Arlene's embroidery continues to be an inspiration. Congratulations, Arlene, on winning 7 places at the Townsville Show. Click on the link to Arelene's name under the heading  MEMBERS' BLOGS in the right hand column of this blog to link to some photos of her winning work.

Farewell morning tea for Anne

Today we held a lovely farewell morning tea for Anne, who is off in a couple of weeks with her husband Michael to sail around Australia.  As a gift the group gave her a Sailing log, and watertight bag and socks.  Joy sang a wonderful ditty for us, but we all joined in on the chorus....  we will miss you buddy......

Some Eye Candy!

On the left is Sharyn's jacket and scarf after she'd so effectively 'embellished' it with rust at the rustathon day.

On the right are the ATC's which were swapped at the last Bookies group meeting.
Above is Selena's concertina book (made before she became addicted to paper weaving or we know it would've been woven!)

And below early members, Sharyn and Gai, welcome founder member Dana to our Wednesday meeting.

Delia'a Class

We were treated to a display of some of Delia H's work at Show and Tell last Wednesday. Del is a textile artist from the Sunshine Coast who visited our group and was pursuaded to join. To see more of her work visit her blog, Delia's Place . Del's aim is to learn everything she can and to pass it on. In keeping with this philosophy she has generously offered to give us a class on Thursday 13th May at the farmhouse starting at 9.30, on her Flowers in the Sunshine art quilt. An example of this project is pictured below.

If you'd like to come to the Flowers in the Sunshine Class here is a list of  requirements:

  1. A4 (11.5” x 8.5”) size piece of felt (don’t get a really fluffy one)
  2. Black net 1” larger then felt
  3. Vlisoflex (paper backed fusible web) or heat and bond 1” large then felt
  4. Binding and backing fabric
  5. Angelina in colour of your choice
  6. Fabric Paint I use Jo Sonia but any will work
  7. Silk flowers and leaves of your choice pull these apart taking all stamens and plastic off back of the silk flower and leaves. You may pick any type of flower you want but don’t make them too big or bulky.
  8. Motif of something like butterfly if you like to use
  9. Beads of your colour choice to finish
  10. Metallic Machine Embroidery thread I like to use hologram as it is flat and not round and does not break as easily.
  11. Metallic or Embroidery needle. They have bigger eyes.
  12. Del usually sews straight onto the felt but if your machine will not sew on this use a tearaway behind it or vilene.
  13. Sewing machine in good order and able to drop the feed dogs.
  14. Usual sewing needs and cutting mat and cutter.
See you there! (Thanks Del.)

Wednesday 28th April 2010

Shown at the meeting today was this expertly woven table runner made by Janet W.

And, Annette S brought along this very textural piece made from hessian, using the shrinkage technique. It was rusted using vinegar and rusty bits. The black tones were achieved by accident, Annette told us, after she decided to try some tea on the piece. Tannin on rust turns it black, it seems. The piece is called Scrappy Jack RIP in memory of her father who was nicknamed Scrappy Jack. Now we know why Annette walks around with her nose to the ground collecting bits and pieces of trash! Oops, I mean treasures ....

After lunch the Bookies met and, led by Barb N, discussed the creation of content for concertina books. Mary T and Barb had completed house books with which to inspire us. These can be seen underneath the group photo.

Bit small ..... here're bigger versions:

That's better!

ATCs were swapped and pictured below are some of the swaps. A wonderfully diverse collection of techniques and mediums.

Wonderful Wednesdays!

On  24th February we enjoyed another great social morning. Most of the show and tell consisted of postcards. If you look under Members' Allbums in the right hand column of this blog, you'll see a heading Postcards. Click on that and you'll link to the postcard photos. To the left are a three photos of a few of the other items we saw.

After the general meeting Janet B lead us in a fabric paper workshop, which was very informative and lots of fun. One of us didn't follow instructions too well and had to try again at home. Ho hum! Here are some photos Janet took whilst we played.

Next week I hope everyone who participated will bring their finished pieces for us to see and I'll take photos for those of you who can't be there.
