Coptic Binding Workshop at Bookies

At bookies in February, Gai showed us a single sheet Coptic style binding.  This style  of binding requires heavy paper so the stitches do not tear the paper.  With this technique, Pam made a book using the handmade cards she has received from friends.

Wednesday 25 January 2012

Hi, we're back meeting regularly on Wednesday's, here are some photos, the 'Bookies' group have had their first sample day and meeting to nut out what to do for the rest of the year.  There has been the first ATC (artist trading card) swap for the year.  This was a challenge using a beer coaster that was found at the pub where Bookies had their Christmas party luncheon last year.  Unfortunately I don't have a whole coaster to show you.  sorry...  There are also some photos of some of the show and tell that was handed around.

Bookies - Stamping Fun

On Wednesday at Fibres it was Bookies time and as usual there was lots of fun and laughter.  Many thanks to Annette for showing us some fun ways to create stamps and the novel idea of simple everyday objects that can be used as stamps.  We will no longer look at all those pesky bits of packaging in quite the same way.

Below are this month's Artist Trading Cards

The New Year is off to a creative start....

On Wednesday afternoon we gathered for the Bookies planning meeting a chance for members to decide what they would like to learn, what they are able to share and a group direction for the coming year.

A suggestion was put forward that I show people the process that I use to Art Journal, this suggestion snowballed into monthly prompts for a group of single sheets that Birte will show us how to bind into a book later in the year.

January's prompt - If I had wings.......

to be completed by the February meeting.  Even if you are out of town feel free to follow these prompts that I will be posting.  Just use a readymade book, or alter a book...if you feel the urge to join us please comment with a link to your page for everyone to see.  This process is always fascinating because it is so interesting to see how different people tackle the same topic.

Birte's single sheet coptic binding - stay tuned for the workshop date

Artist Trading Cards - another one of those snowball affairs...January two years ago Linda S. suggested we swap an ATC once a month...it was only meant to be for a year but Fiberians fell in love with the process and below you will see the January 2011 cards.

Some Eye Candy!

On the left is Sharyn's jacket and scarf after she'd so effectively 'embellished' it with rust at the rustathon day.

On the right are the ATC's which were swapped at the last Bookies group meeting.
Above is Selena's concertina book (made before she became addicted to paper weaving or we know it would've been woven!)

And below early members, Sharyn and Gai, welcome founder member Dana to our Wednesday meeting.

Paper Weaving

Bookies group had lots of fun learning to weave two images together to form a new complex picture. Pictured below, Marion shared the skill, assisted by Barb.

Members of the group set about the task with enthusiasm and here are some of the results.

Thank you Marion and Barb. We all enjoyed ourselves very much.

Glen Skien Workshop

Judy, Susie, Joan, Sharyn, Barb and Carol enjoyed a workshop held by Glen Skien at the Perc Tucker Gallery on Saturday afternoon. This followed a most interesting talk by Glen earlier in the day. Looking forward to seeing the outcome of what you all learnt on Wednesday!

Wednesday 28th April 2010

Shown at the meeting today was this expertly woven table runner made by Janet W.

And, Annette S brought along this very textural piece made from hessian, using the shrinkage technique. It was rusted using vinegar and rusty bits. The black tones were achieved by accident, Annette told us, after she decided to try some tea on the piece. Tannin on rust turns it black, it seems. The piece is called Scrappy Jack RIP in memory of her father who was nicknamed Scrappy Jack. Now we know why Annette walks around with her nose to the ground collecting bits and pieces of trash! Oops, I mean treasures ....

After lunch the Bookies met and, led by Barb N, discussed the creation of content for concertina books. Mary T and Barb had completed house books with which to inspire us. These can be seen underneath the group photo.

Bit small ..... here're bigger versions:

That's better!

ATCs were swapped and pictured below are some of the swaps. A wonderfully diverse collection of techniques and mediums.

Wonderful Wednesdays!

On  24th February we enjoyed another great social morning. Most of the show and tell consisted of postcards. If you look under Members' Allbums in the right hand column of this blog, you'll see a heading Postcards. Click on that and you'll link to the postcard photos. To the left are a three photos of a few of the other items we saw.

After the general meeting Janet B lead us in a fabric paper workshop, which was very informative and lots of fun. One of us didn't follow instructions too well and had to try again at home. Ho hum! Here are some photos Janet took whilst we played.

Next week I hope everyone who participated will bring their finished pieces for us to see and I'll take photos for those of you who can't be there.
